The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Joe DiPietro
Nominated for Best Book of a Musical, Nice Work If You Can Get It
"I was just about to take the dog out for a rainy walk when the nominees came on, and I’m over the moon. Literally, my apartment was buzzing this morning. Right away, your phone starts beeping and buzzing and ringing—every way of communicating with you, people do. [Nice Work If You Can Get It] is a show that Kathleen Marshall and I loved putting together, and I think 10 nominations is a real tribute to Matthew Broderick and our entire cast, who bring so much joy to people every night. I grew up in New Jersey and I always went to Broadway, so the Tonys were very much on my mind. [Winning] was totally on my list. I have to win about 20 more Tonys to get all of my childhood Tony Award acceptance speeches out of my system. And then of course the fun part is going to the show [tonight] and celebrating with the cast. Oh, I just realized [my dog] hasn’t gotten the walk yet! I’ve been too busy. He’s happily curled up on the pillow—I’ll give him an extra treat. So perhaps my dog is happiest of all this morning!"
